Temple Board Meeting:
Art Hirahara resigned as gardener; discussion as to affiliated organizations donating money to hire gardener.
Troop Leaders: Report by Nancy
Hayashibara
There are currently 58 registered girl scouts, including 7 new scouts, 14 leaders and 13 adults. We have submitted and application for the 2005-2006 Supertroop patch. New Membership Coordinator for Belmont is Lorene Boudaghian who will be out for a month. Jess will be taking her place. Discussion of consolidation of councils in October 2007. 310 councils will become 109. Joining Angeles Council will be Mt. Wilson Vista, Long Beach, Spanish Trails, parts of San Fernando, Ventura and Joshua Tree Councils. Name of council and troop numbers may be changed. Southern California Conference for all troops will be November 18, 2007. Troops will be changing their bank accounts to Washington Mutual, Wells Fargo or Wescom Credit Union. There was a question as to why we needed to change now if the council name and troop number may change. Reorganization of girl scout levels: Daisies – Kindergarten and 1st grade; Brownies – 2nd and 3rd grades; Juniors – 4th and 5th grades; Cadettes – 6th through 8th grades; Seniors – 9th and 10th grades; Ambassadors – 11th and 12th grades. Uniforms will be simplified in the future. Upcoming neighborhood activities: One Warm Coat Day – collection of coats (deliver to Ted Oyama by November 18); Rose Float Decoration, Sea World sleepover, Nutcracker Ballet, What’s Growing in my backyard? Rancho Los Alamitos on October 29; “Stand by Me” at LA COMA. Dates to remember: Halloween Party – October 27; Investiture – November 3; check with leader for meeting on November 10; Keiro – December 9; Year End Party – December 15; No meeting on October 20, November 24, December 22, December 29, January 5; next scout meeting will be January 12, 2007. Nancy will be resigning as troop leader after this year. The new leader will be Lisa Kawasaki.
Group Reports:
- Brownies: Reported by Joy Middo. September 8, first meeting of the year. Girls voted on the try its they would like to earn. Welcomed four new Brownies: B3 – Madisen Yasuda (parents-Lori/Todd), B2 – Alyssa Lum (mother-Carol), B1 – Penelope Hill (mother-Amy). Sandie Tom lead the first Colors and Sahpes try it by having the girls create pictures out of colored foam shapes. September 15, Eileen Nozaki taught the girls about primary colors. They used paint to first create a color wheel. Then they learned how to make other colors. After that, they discovered how to make shading and tinting using black and white paint. September 22, Joy Middo led the girls in the first requirement for the Brownie Safety award. Studied about Emergency Safety while at Nishi practicing earthquake and fire drills. The girls also made a floor plan of the room and showed their escape routes. October 6, the Cadettes are helping the Brownies with Yarn painting. The Brownies are also enjoying the Welcome Back party.
- Juniors: Reported by Emi Morimoto. Have 14 Juniors this year, including 5 Brownies who bridged. Two new Junior I – Lauren
C. and Cheyenne A. and one Junior II – Susie T In September the girls voted on the badges that they’d like to earn. All Juniors have already earned The Choice Is Yours badge. The Juniors 1 and 2 have also completed some of the requirements for the Sign of the Sun badge. After they finish this Sign, they will begin working on the Computer Fun badge. Juniors II and III have also begun working on their Bronze Award. Norene Yasukochi, Junior III leader, has been guiding them and will be meeting with Juniors II and III separately for the next couple of months.
- Cadette 1 and 2: Reported by Rose Kamiya. September 16, Cadettes II met for a pre-requirement program for the Silver Awards. They will be working on Your Own Business badge. They are working on a fundraiser. This will include advertising, creating flyers, invitations, making products for sale. The products will be on display with prices on December 8 at a craft sale. Cadettes I and II are helping with the Brownies tonight.
- Cadette 3: Reported by Ted Oyama. Cadettes III are working on their Silver Award project. They will host a first aid clinic. Cadettes 3 participated in the National Public Lands clean up at Santa Fe Dam on September 29. The Cadettes III’s earned their ARC first aid certificate.
- Seniors I: Reported by Stacey Tanaka for Lynette Hamada. Senior 1’s are not meeting tonight (October 6) since they are joining their families for Nishi Boy Scout canoe trip on the Colorado River. They met last Sunday, October 1, to finalize a timeframe for earning Interest patches and Studio 2B. They will be starting their “Seven Steps to Gold Award” requirements this month.
- Seniors II: Reported by Stacey Tanaka. The girls are finishing up Step 2 of the pre-Gold requirements – leadership hours (required 30 hours) and Step 3 is the Gold Career Award – required 40 hours (example: career – shadow one or more people, apprenticeship or internship, visit colleges or trade school or a paying job). Outing with Senior I to Disneyland on September 17.
- Seniors III: Reported by Cyndy Wakita. On Oct 2, Angeles Council received the Gold Award applications for Jamie
H. and Kathryn H. We are waiting for approval of their projects. Michelle
K. and Karen W. have completed their Gold Award project. They have been notified that they will be receiving their Gold Awards in June.

- Terrie Itomura –
Nishi Cubs will have a Creative Memory fundraiser on November 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., $15, a light lunch will be served.
Halloween: (Cheryl Louie) The annual Halloween Party will be on October 27 at 7:30 p.m. Each family is requested to donate candy or toys (50 pieces). Also sign up sheet for finger foods circulated.
Nuts and Magazines Sale: (Nancy Teranishi/Norene Yasukochi) Sale starts today. Information has been given to all scouts. All orders must be turned in by next Friday. If you are not coming to Nishi next Friday, please fax or e-mail the nut orders. Remember that this is one of two main fundraiser. Minimum amount to sell per scout is $25. Money earned from this fundraiser will go toward a pizza party (at the scout’s open house). Each girl will earn $50 toward an outing with the Troop. It also pays for patches, pins and the leaders to attend the outing with the scouts. Our troop is in charge for the neighborhood. Checks for magazine order due on October 13. Nut delivery is tentatively set for October 29.
