Reports
Treasurers Report: January, 2005. As prepared by Junie Obi, Treasurer.

Temple Board Meeting:

  • BCA is collecting money for the Tsunami Fund, the envelope is upstairs in the office. Our ministerial advisors for this year are Rev. Briones and Rev. Koizumi.

Temple Affiliated Organizations Meeting:

  • No report. Attendance by Susan Hanada for Yakisoba meeting only.

Troop Leaders:

  • Report by Nancy.
    • On Jan. 29th there is a Girl Scout Leader’s Conference at El Segundo High School at 9:00 – 3:30. Four leaders will be attending to get training.
    • Some girls will be going to the Boy Scout ski trip on Feb. 12th.
    • On Feb. 25th OCBC Girl Scout Troop has invited us to their Girls Day Celebration at 6:30 to 9:00. There is little opportunity for our girls to meet with other girls from the other troops so please encourage them to go.
    • Girl Scout Sunday is March 6th, Senior III girls will be chairing the service. Please wear your uniforms to church on that day. This year is our 20th year as Nishi Girl Scout Troop 1213.
    • We asked Alan Miyatake to take the picture and he was available on March 11th. Please try and make sure that your girls have all the necessary items on their uniforms.
    • Nancy talked to the leaders about a Tsunami donation which will be 10% of the nut sale which is $150.00 plus what the girls have already donated. Motion by Ted Oyama to donate $150.00 from the nut sale to give to the Red Cross for the Tsunami donation. Second by Lynnette Hamada. Discussion: Give it to Red Cross or BCA? Motion stands to give the donation to Red Cross. All in favor. Oppose. Motion carried.

Group Reports:

  • Brownies: Reported by Emi Morimoto.
    • Last month the girls completed their second Try-It, “Penny Power”. Thank you to Kevin Furukawa who taught the girls about differentiating between real and counterfeit money.
    • They are now completing their third Try-It, “Senses”. Thank you to Dan and Eileen Yoshimura who helped the girls create a box of senses which contained various items that could be investigated using each of the five senses. They also used their senses to taste different mystery snacks.
    • Thank you for Walt and Cheryl Louie who taught the girls about zoetrope sight using film frames as an example. They also helped the girls create their own miniature file.
    • Thank you to Michiyo Watanabe and Paula Naito who helped the girls explore the sense of smell and taste with mystery diced fruit and veggies. They also helped the girls create their own guessing game using only the sense of touch.
    • This evening the girls are being treated to a spa by the Jr. IIIs.
  • Juniors: Reported by Lynn Taketomo: Juniors I and II.
    • They have completed the Ms. Fix It badge this month. They also had an opportunity to put together a shelf from project kits donated by Home Depot. The girls really enjoyed this activity and in order to show their appreciation, they wrote a thank you note to Home Depot for their generous donation.
    • Tonight the girls are creating seed art with some of the Cadettes for the Plants and Animals badge. This badge is also the last badge the J2s need in order to start their Bronze Award project.

    • The girls are working on their Junior Aide Award and Leadership Award. We will complete the Junior Aide portion on 2/11/05.
    • We worked with the Cub Scouts on 1/14/05 and are treating the Brownies with a spa tonight.
    • We are currently trying to complete the Leadership Award and are logging the services hours. The Service Log is due on April 1, 2005.
    • We are also planning on the bridging activities in San Francisco which is on May 14, 2005.
    • We are also working on the special interest patches.
    • On Feb. 5, 2005 Mr. Oyama will conduct First Aid training. Please sign up after the meeting.
  • Cadette 1 and 2: Reported by Lisa Kawasaki.
    • On Dec. 18th all the girls completed their Adult CPR class.
    • New officers were elected, they are: President: Jenna T., Vice-President: Caitlyn H., Secretary: Katie Y., Treasurer: Jenny Y.
    • The girls went over their calendar for the rest of the year. Finishing up “Your Own Business” Interest Patch and they also made inventions and ads.
    • The girls are writing to their pen pals to a Cadette troop in Japan.
    • Tonight they are helping the Brownies and Juniors.
  • Cadette 3: Reported by Stacy Tanaka.
    • In December all 5 girls completed their Silver Project.
    • For the month of January/February they will complete their write-up.
    • On December 18th 4 girls completed their CPR renewal.
  • Seniors I: Reported by Cyndy Wakita.
    • The girls decided on their interest patches which are Understanding Yourself and Others, Car Sense, and Its About Time.
    • Because of their school activities the girls will be working independently.
    • They will be planning an Open House to recruit new girl scouts in Sept. This is a requirement to fulfill part of their challenge.
    • On Friday, Feb. 25th the girls will be attending OCBC’s Girls Day Celebration.
  • Seniors II: No report.
  • Seniors I: No report.

Old Business
  • T-Shirts/Sweatshirts: (Ethel Toguchi) – No report.
  • Refreshment Schedule: Reported by Donna. Please sign up on the schedule that is being passed around. Only three families per parent meeting and please leave the girls side for the leaders.
  • Garden Clean-Up: Reported by Reiko: At the affiliate meeting we received some suggestions from Art Hirahara who does a lot of gardening. Please make sure that you sweep all the leaves and debris around the perimeter of the church grounds, including the gutters. Rake all leaves and other trash from under the bushes and trees especially around the bell tower. Please be careful around the water sprinkler head, if they get damaged please report it to the office. Report any malfunctions or damage to gardening equipment to the office. Mow the lawn every week even though it looks like it doesn’t needs it and if you have any questions or comments, please write to Art Hirahara. The garden schedule is being passed around. Please fill out for May 15, September 18 and January 22, 2006.
  • Scout Year End: Reported by Dennis Kimura. Lorraine would like to thank everybody for bringing their food.
  • Oseibo gifts: Oseibo gifts were passed out to the leaders tonight. Thank you to the leaders.

New Business
  • OCBC Girls Day Celebration on Friday, Feb. 25th: (Ted Oyama) Our Troop will have two booths. One is making origami and the other we will be making sakura manju.
  • Cookie Sales: (Cheryl Louie). Cookie orders are due on February 4th. If you are not here on Friday, please email cayosh@aol.com me with your order. She will take orders until Sat. noon. Reminder: Every girl scout must sell $25.00 worth of cookies.
  • Yakisoba: (April Miyatake) The date is March 5th and a sign up sheet is being passed around. Both parents need to sign up for a shift and I need a Senior III parent to sign up for a shift and be in charge of that shift. If you have a boy/cub scout please sign up with them. There is also a list of items to buy, please save your receipt the girl scouts will reimburse you. Please see April. On Friday, March 4th at 6:30 pm. all parents are asked to help cut the veggies and help with the preparation for Saturday morning. Bring knives, cutting boards and aprons. Money is due today. Please make checks payable to Girl Scout Troop 1213.
