Reports
Treasurers Report: Prepared by Junie Obi, Treasurer.
Temple Board Meeting:
- Arlene Yokoyama stated that 1st street is being widened which will result in street closures and detours;
- Due to temple expansion, cost of utilities for light and air conditioning have increased. Remember to turn off lights and air conditioning after Friday night
meetings.
- Cannot get refrigerator truck for obon in 2006. Reviewing whether to remodel temple’s refrigeration system. When budget is reviewed, increased cost for utilities and need to upgrade refrigeration system may lead to increasing dues for temple.
- Temple will be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Troop Leaders: Report by Nancy
Hayashibara
- 10/22- CPR/First Aid training for leaders was held at Nishi. Ted Oyama was the trainer.
- 11/4- Investiture Ceremony: welcomed 12 Brownies, 1 Junior, 1 Cadette and 4 Brownie leaders to the troop.
- 12/10- Nancy to go to Cookie Training meeting.
- Money for Hurricane Katrina donation is due today, Nov 18th, and should be given to Nancy.
- At the Neighborhood meeting, it was announced that there is a new troop #318 at Commonwealth Elementary School.
- For any Girl Scout or leader who received and completed a council performance assessment, please turn in to leader.
- Council resale shop is closed 12/16-12/22.
- See Nancy if you are interested in the following activities: Nutcracker Ballet (4 locations) or Rose Float Decoration.
- Article on 8 Nishi Girl Scouts who are receiving the Gold Award was submitted to the Rafu Shimpo.
Group Reports:
- Brownies: Reported by
Isabelle Sato. The Brownies attended a Welcome Back Party hosted by the Cadettes. They also learned about each others favorites for their Caring and Sharing Try-It. Sandie Tom led them in making luminaries, completing their first Try-It—“Me and My Shadow”. Our second Try-It is “Outdoor Adventurer” and Curtis Rooks led the first activity in the kaikan where he taught the girls to identify foliage, they played Flashlight Tag, and pitched a tent in which all 21 Brownies fit into. Isabelle Sato led the next activity in which the girls were paired up and had to describe an outdoor item in their bag to their partner who had to guess the object. 12 new Brownies and 4 new Brownie Leaders took place in the Investiture Ceremony. Chris Furusawa is coordinating a field trip to the zoo tomorrow for an Outdoor Adventurer activity.
- Juniors: Reported by Emi Morimoto: J1s, J2s, and J3s completed the Court Sports and Drawing & Painting badges. For the Court Sports badge, the girls (1) learned about various court sports, (2) watched a short instructional video on basketball, (3) participated in a variety of upper and lower body stretches/warm-ups, (4) practiced a few basketball ball handling drills, and (5) learned about passing and keeping score in volleyball.
For the Drawing & Painting badge, the girls (1) experimented with different art media (pastels, water colors, and chalk), (2) created a “Happy B-Day Juliette Low” mural on large butcher paper, (3) learned about primary & secondary colors by mixing Play-Doh, (4) painted with string, (5) drew pictures showing perspective, and (6) learned how to draw human figures using shapes (“bubble people”).
They are presently working on the Music Fan badge. So far, they’ve (1) made simple musical instruments using Perrier bottles and built/played a water bottle xylophone, (2) listened to different animal sounds and tried to identify the animal that made the sound, and (3) created/performed dance steps to the chorus of a Jojo song. Tonight the girls are finishing up their Music Fan badge requirements and preparing for the Year End performance.
In January, the J1s & J2s will earn their Junior Aide patch by working with the Tiger Cubs, and the J3s will earn their Junior Aide patch by working with the Brownies.
- Cadette 1 and 2: Reported by Ted Oyama. Nov. 4 Discussed Halloween Party; CI/CII worked at the pumpkin patch. Updated Leadership hours. Donating $2.00 per girl to Hurricane Katrina Fund. Will be doing a skit at
the Year End Party. Elections of new officers. President: Marissa

Nov. 18 Working with Brownies on practicing song for Year End Party and making reindeer antlers. Cadettes continue working on their “From Sea to Shore” interest patch with Mr. Oyama. Talked about the 50th National Convention in Atlanta.
- Cadette 3: Reported by Lynette Hamada. Cadette III’s collected over 200 towels and blankets for Hurricane/Rita pet victims. Towels/blankets were delivered to SPCA Long Beach Animal Shelter on Oct. 23. Completed service project and met all requirements for Pets Interest Patch. Attended Guide Dog Graduation at Guide Dogs of America (GDA) in Sylmar on Oct.
23 to gather information for Silver Award Project. Conducted interviews with GDA staff and several guide dog owners to determine the specific needs of individuals who have guide dogs. Will begin to implement steps required for Silver Award. Worked with Senior I’s to provide a balloon shapes booth for the Halloween party on Oct. 29.
- Seniors I: Reported by
Stacey Tanaka. The girls are finishing up their interest patchwork requirements for “Family Living” and “Understanding Yourself and Others”. Tonight they are watching John Wooden’s motivational DVD on values, victory and peace of mind to fulfill the Career Exploration requirement for “Understanding Yourself and Others” interest patch. During December, they will be putting together a Christmas basket for a family through Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Holiday Elf Program 2005. This will fulfill their Service Project requirement for the “Family Living” interest patch. They are also working with the Senior IIs on their upcoming Career Fair on December 2nd.
- Seniors II: Report by
Cyndy Wakita. Career Fair will be on Dec. 2nd from 7:30-9pm. Juniors, Cadettes and Seniors are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. Keiro Holiday bingo event is on Saturday, December 10th (10am to wrap gifts; 1pm for Brownies and Cub Scouts to assist Keiro Seniors in playing Bingo. Flyers for recommended donations are being distributed (140 residents in the retirement facility; 90 in the intermediate care facility. Collection dates are Dec. 2nd and 9th. Please donate unwrapped gifts.) Meeting at Cyndy’s home on Sunday, Nov. 20th after services for Senior 2s to decorate bags for Keiro and completing an Interest Patch. Gold award prerequisites need to be written and completed in Jan. 2006 if your daughter plans to apply for the Gold during April-Oct. timeframe.

- Nuts & Magazine (Shirley and Patrick
Marty): Thanks to the leaders for their assistance with the nut and magazine drive. The nut money is due tonight. There was a change in the butter toffee formulation; it can be exchanged today if there are customer complaints.
- Halloween Party (Noreen
Yasukochi): Thanks to parents, Nancy (J2 parent) and Noreen for supporting the Halloween party. There were 85 RSVPs; 70 kids attended the Halloween party.
- Refreshment Schedule (Leona Hirayanagi) Refreshment schedule distributed today. Year-end food sign-up for finger foods, desserts is being circulated. Need to bring enough food for your family plus
four individuals. Label all dishes and utensils.
- Garden Clean-up (Leona Hirayanagi)
- (March 12) has been given to Girl Scouts since the cub scouts do not have enough parents. New parents should sign up for March 12th.
